My Type Assignment

My type 1: 

For this type assignment we had to replace a letter with a graphic that had a similar shape to the letter it was replacing. I chose to replace the letter O with an anatomical heart. It may have not been a perfect circle, but it is curvy enough to take the place of the O in the word "love".

My type 2: 

This type assignment had to have a bitmap image overlapping a letter. I typed the letter in InDesign and had to convert my image in photoshop before placing it on InDesign and overlapping it above the letter which had been filled in with black.

My type 3: 

This type assignment was similar to the first assignment but the symbol had to relate to the word. I chose the word "Biohazard" and replaced the O with with the biohazard symbol.

My type 4: 

This type assignment required that I replace a verb or noun with an image. This was sort of like a pun or play on words.

My type 5: 

Instead of combining text and images for this type assignment, the whole assignment was only about images. I had to combine two images to communicate a phrase, cliche or an idea.

My type 6: 

This other type assignment, had to be incorporated an image relating to the text while interacting with it. This wasn't too hard to do since the text was in black and the image I found was also in black. 

My type 7: 

For this type assignment I could only use text. I had to illustrate a word or a concept. I chose the word "growing" and illustrated the O growing/getting bigger.

Type Figures using Adobe InDesign

Type figure 01: 

We were free to use letters and numbers for this figure. I tried to create a clean and organized face but I still wanted to give it some defined characteristics. I used a large C for the outline of the face, four Os for the eyes, and the rest of it (the eyelashes, mouth and makeup) were made up of Js. It was hard to edit the space between the letters because I would lose where and how they were layered. It came to the point where I had to redo the whole thing like a puzzle.

Type figure 02: 

This figure had to be a sentence where the letter forms had to be related to the concept. To do this I tried to make the word "falling" look like it was falling and the word "apart" as if it had been torn apart.

Type figure 03: 

This figure was a bit tougher to make, I had to create a shape using letters the related to the text and have the text wrap around it. For this figure I wrapped a character's log around the Cancer zodiac sign, which is related to the character. Instead of drawing the zodiac sign, I made it with text. I then layered the sign in front of the wall of text, took away it border and wrapped the text below around it.

Type figure 04: 

This was more of a silly figure than a serious one since it was short and easy. We had to create a sentence with an emoticon.

Type figure 05: 

Instead of making this figure in InDesign we had to make it in photoshop and then place it on InDesign. Photoshop made it easier to play with the text after we turned the text into raster. This figure had to be manipulated to help communicate the idea of the word.

Design Stages: 

Audience: 

My audience for this logo is my professor and my classmates. 

Idea: 

The idea for this piece was to create a black and white image with either my name or my initials to create a personal logo. The logo had to be inspired by Gestalt's idea of an image being worth more than the sum of it's parts. So I had to create something that had to do with an interest of mine and have the image be a sort of optical illusion. My image had to have positive and negative space, and lines that didn't mean but that were filled in by my audience's eyes.

Terse: 

 Even though I came up with a lot of ideas, only a few of them really captured the Gestalt style we were supposed to get. I feel that the final image I chose is simple yet fun, and captures the idea of having my audience finish the image in their heads.

Bottom Line: 

This assignment was a very good way to bring all of what we have learned in Photoshop and Illustrator into one piece. My logo was easy to clean on Photoshop and edit in Illustrator which resulted in a piece that I am very proud in.

Chose two concepts and redrew them on a 6" by 6" square.

Final design, cleaned up and changed levels in Photoshop, Traced as a black and white logo and smoothed the anchors in Illustrator.
